Has anyone seen the latest price from Roxio on burning software? I like EZ-CD Creator, but not that much. They want $99 for it. I was forced to pay $69 to upgrade 3 to 4 for Win2K and now $99 for Windows XP. I think this is getting a little rediculous. Anyone have anything else that works beter for a REASONABLE price?

Doesn't XP have builtin burning support?

Yes, but it's not extememly functional. It's basically just DirectCD, it's main purpose is to make file sharing easy. It's a useful, but I personally use some of the more advanced features, I'm just a little upset about having to pay $99 for that.

XP doesn't support packet writing that directCD has. Then it doesn't do other things.
Nero is the only other burner I remember. I don't know how well it works. It might be a peice of junk.

I use both Easy CD Creator and Nero. Roxio is a little easier to use, Nero has more options. I started using Nero about three or four months ago, and only install Roxio because my wife likes it. I'd take Nero over Roxio any day.

Nero is about $50 and is a really good investment for a user who wants to have more control over the burns. It isnt as easy to use as the Roxio however so if you arent sure you want to take the time to play with all the options you can download an evaluation version from www.nero.com I have also had lots of people tell me to not use the integrated buring software that comes with XP because it isnt very stable and lacks most of the functionality that a 3rd party software can provide.

The feature I really miss from the WinXP CD burning software is the ability to create / burn ISO images.

That's a specific feature I'm looking for (ISO burning). MSDN Universival Subscription uses ISO images on it's website for OS's and I'd like the ability to take advantage of them. As for the internal burning software, it guess it's ok for copying files, but it doesn't provide much else. It serves its goal I think, because it did work for me with no configuration.

I'm using Fireburner (http://www.fireburner.com) and it seems to work fine for me in XP. I really wish there was a built in ISO burner to XP too.
Roxio released the XP patch for Easy CD Creator a few days ago.

I think microsoft released a utility to allow you to mount iso images as virtual cd-rom drives, and if you didn't have a third party program, you could use that to copy the files from the iso to the cd burning folder, though you wouldn't get near the amount of control that you have with software like Nero, which is my favorite..especially because it will do things like burn .asf files to VCD 2.0 compliant disks.

Try CloneCD.
http://www.elby.org/CloneCD/english/
It is very small and you can burn anything with it. Copy protected game cds? No problem. Tried to back up my Red Alert 2 cds, but I found out it had Safedisc2 on it. CloneCD worked great. I think it is like $30.

Do you have a link or the name of the program? That would be great to have.

I'll agree with this whole Roxio not really supporting XP. I bought a couple of HP's (and just this week) a new sony cd-burner, and decided to make a copy of a cd my mom has for my younger bro so he can listen to it up in his room...... XP has no good way of doing this WITHOUT converting the ENTIRE cd down to WMA or MP3 and then unencoding all of that back to the CD...... well this is a lot of instrumental music on this CD, and well I find that converting to a compressed fileformat doesn't lend itself real well to ummm QUALITY (note all my cd's are in mp3 format on my computer so I realize the diffrence) I just wish that if MS was going to include the ability to burn, they would get the CORE functionality down: data-> CD, audio -> CD, CD -> CD. That's it, they only really do 1 of those.

I've been using roxio on XP with no flaws. But then again, i don't really burn all that much. I would suggest just getting both Roxio and cdrwin. That's my personal favorite.

I just recently started using nero and have found it to be well worth the investment. With EasyCD I found myself wasting CDs. Nero is alot better for the user that burns alot of music from files obtained from sources such as Napster and Morpheous. Not all the files you download will be burnable and Nero does a much better job of detecting these errors before buring, than EasyCD does. Nero is worth your money!

This site has two utilities that are really useful for dealing with ISOs... one enables native burning of ISOs from WinXP and the other mounts them as virtual CD-ROM drives. Just scroll down for a while and you'll come to them.

One of my personal favorites is still NTI cdmaker pro. It can do just about anything, and makes VERY few frisbees. The other good one to own is clone cd. it can copy ANY disk I have come across so far....that is to make backup copies of all my own software :)
