By default, Outlook XP blocks files with attachments that may be harmful to a system unless certain registry keys are edited to allow the extensions.

This is a simple GUI that facilitates the registry editing.

As someone who actually worked on Microsoft Outlook, I must say I don't understand why you unblock executable files. There's no need. Have people zip stuff. It's better all around. Then, there is no chance of a virus problem. It may take some getting used to, but it's there for everyone's protection.

Having done anti-virus technical support for over 3 years, I understand this as well. While I think this is a useful feature, I know what I'm doing with attachments and I don't like having some of them blocked. That's the only reason why I use this tool. Outlook XP's attachment blocking capability is not a substitute for good judgement/AV protection from a user.

What a great tool, thanks!!

I was really surprised that Microsoft didn't let the user choose preferences...

That is kind of irritating that it's automatically blocked. Kind of reminds me of the Eudora "pepper" system...

My only complaint about the Microsoft comment is that I don't want Outlook to do everything for me. How about a pop-up box the first time and executable comes in that says, "This could be harmful.... blah blah... Do you want to block executable files from appearing? "

Perhaps the average user doesn't know how to protect themself from themself. But an option would definitely be nice... Great tool!

People can zip virus and send them that way hehe.

Grreat tool. While I think the choice was a good one on the part of Microsoft, I'm glad it's a registry hack so that people who really knows what they're doing can un-dumb their systems. I send EXE's to friends to test or play with all the time.

I like the comment of UNDUMBING the system. :)

Common sense is going to rule the day, and until people stop opening attachments that are named secretLetter.doc.THISISAVIRUS then I think it is a good feature to block types of attachments. But it is nice to be able to turn this option off.

Agreed. This tool just takes advantage of the Microsoft KB article explaining how to make the changes in the registry yourself in a simple GUI.

Thanks for the comments.
