This might be a misunderstanding on your part, but just to clarify, WinXP doesn't run "MSN" Messenger, but instead "Windows" Messenger, a look-alike but with different capabilities built-in with/for Windows XP. If you installed *MSN* Messenger on your system, that could be the problem. The two have the same core functionality but Windows Messenger is embedded in the system and contains more functionality. Uninstall *MSN* Messenger and go to Windows Updates for updates to *Windows* Messenger.

I agree Heath. Microsoft strongly recommends NOT installing MSN Messenger in Windows XP. He's confused about what Messenger client should be used on XP.

Yes. I think he got it wrong. I run Windows Messenger from day one and it doesn't give any "memory" problems though I couldn't have the voice chat working with Zone Alarm running. If I shutdown Zone Alarm, it works fine.

ur messenger comes with winXP will be upgrade(promt) automatically.

Yes, there is a way. Open up MSN Messenger, from there go the Tools menu > Options.... And in the Options menu, click on the Preferences tab on the top. In that section you'll see a checkbox that says "Run this program when Windows Starts", deselect it and Messenger should now not startup when you first boot up.

You can actually uninstall MSN Messenger.
Open c:\Windows\Inf\sysoc.inf (where c is your drive, Windows is the OS folder)
Remove "hide" from the following line:
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,7
Goto Add/Remove programs > Add/Remove Windows Components
You should see an entry for MSN messenger at the bottom, allowing you to uninstall it.

I haven't had problems with running msn. But getting on it and staying on it seems to be a problem. THeir service is just crap. it's down alot of the time for days/hours on end. I don't think microsoft should stay in the Instant Message business. leave it up to AOL ( lol ) and the others. But that's just my experience.

One of the differences is enhanced video and audio communications that you cna't simply do with other versions of Windows...you would have to use netmeeting to do that...if you use MSN Messenger you simply can't logon to it using a non msn, hotmail or passport mail account. Windows MEssenger allows you to have IM services with your current email address... all you got to do is register it as a .NET Passport and it should work fine...

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen!!! Can someone in this world, please tell me why my last posting deserved a 1 rating???? I feel someone is abusing his/her (almost sure : His) power here at Devhood. Come on!!! How can a question , a very relevant one I might add, deserve a 1 rating??????
The person behind this, If you have something against me, say it to my face, but don't go around giving 1 ratings.
How many times does this have to be repeated? READ the guidelines for rating other users.
It saddens me to know that there are some dark neighbors in our community.
You are really a coward if you just go and give me a 1 rating on this post as well.

I use XP and I have been going along fine without MSN/Windows Messenger. Deleting the directory seemed to be what worked, and I haven't noticed any reduced functionality. MSIE, Outlook, and Hotmail all work fine, and I don't have it pop up whenever I check my mail.
BTW: Here is the rating criteria. I think that your message actually brings up some good discussion, and was not posted in order to get a quick point.
Rate 1: The message is meaningless blather or was obviously posted in order to gain a quick point. Casual conversation is not included in this. However, one or two word responses which are posted thoughtlessly should receive consideration for a "1" rating. Also, all users who post in abusive threads should receive a one, even the ones who are reprimanding the offenders. By posting in the thread and dragging out the issue, you are only contributing to the problem.
Rate 2: When in doubt, don't rate at all or rate a 2.
Rate 3: This message provided you with helpful information that was worth your time, or it brings up an insightful and thoughtful discussion.

Hey, on October 2, 2002 MSN Messenger Version 4.6.0083 was launched. Does anybody know what was fixed on this new version? All I could find was:
"Minor Update: Version 4.6.0083
Released October 2, 2002
Miscellaneous minor updates"
I found this here
Does anyone know what these "miscellaneous minor updates" are?

I just have the same problem(=MSN 5.* slowing down my system), Although I'm running it on a dinosaur; Petium 166MHz, Win 98, at first I never had any kind of troubles.
Still somethhing is very suprising; Once MSN opend (I mean the window) it slows down my computer but if connected and the window closed my pc slows down at the speed of .... I don't know anything that's going THAT slow sorry. That's why I've been looking everyware on the net to find a sollution but no-one seems to have the exact same problem.
If any-one, please knows how to fix this, I would really be greatfull, please send an email to cghyoot@hotmail.com

I have XP and i got the MSN Messenger 6.0, its beta but it runs good speed and has new custom emoticons and things. I like it - way more customizeable than the old msn's. Although you cannot download from the ninemsn.com site. You can get it from here :
www.whingebox.com/msmg6.exe
But i know i thought it was a bit dubious when i downloaded it (not being from the original site and all). I guarentee it works though.
Good luck with fixing ur problem.
